Fiberglass is a composite insulating material made from extremely fine glass fibers and has a texture similar to that of wool. Hence, it is also called glass wool. Invented in the 1930s, it is used primarily for thermal insulation of buildings. Many small pockets of air are trapped between the fibers of glass and this results in high thermal insulation properties. Fiberglass comes in two forms – slabs or sheets and rolls. The sheets or called batts and the continuous rolls are called blankets. Insulation Wizards offers both forms of fiberglass.

Glass wool is a loose fill material that can be formed into sheets or panels that will insulate flat surfaces such as cavity wall insulation, ceiling tiles, curtain walls, and air ducts. It is also typically used for insulation of pipes and for soundproofing purposes. Fiberglass is very easy to install and can be done in a short period.

Fiberglass is not the ideal material to use in cold regions, as heat is quickly stripped away from fibers of glass, resulting in a lower thermal resistivity, or R-value. Insulation Wizards advises customers in very cold parts to not use fiberglass, but rather go for cellulose.

Cellulose insulation is a fiber frequently used in wall and roof cavities for thermal and acoustic insulation purposes. Cellulose insulation is one of the oldest types of building insulation material. It is usually made by milling recycled paper and treating it with boric acid. It comes in many forms – dry cellulose, spray cellulose, stabilized cellulose, and low dust cellulose. Each of these form serve different purposes.

Dry cellulose is usually used in old homes by installing cellulose into holes drilled into the tops of the walls. Spray cellulose is normally applied to new wall constructions. Stabilized cellulose is frequently implemented in attics and in roof installations. Low dust cellulose is great for places where dust is a major problem and needs to be minimized. In comparison to fiberglass, cellulose insulation is renowned for possessing superior thermal resistivity. Since cellulose is not in a fixed shape like fiberglass, it is able to mold around any object in any corner of a home or office, leaving few pockets of unprotected areas. This ultimately enhances the insulation properties. In doing so, there is a reduction of energy consumption, making it a very good option. In addition, it is composed of recycled paper, making it very environment friendly.

However, it is not perfect. It is difficult to install and weighs much more than fiberglass. Plus, it is more expensive than fiberglass. These are all things that should be taken into consideration when deciding on an insulation material for your location.
